Greatest boxing journalist Bert Sugar dies at 75

Bert Sugar, The premier boxing journalist of the late 20th and early 21st centuries, has died at age 75 from cardiac arrest after a period of battling lung cancer, according to Reuters.  I had the good fortune of meeting him on two occasions, once outside the press conference after the Robin Wright-Felix Trinidad fight at the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas, and another time before a Golden Boy Promotions press conference at Gleason’s Gym in Brooklyn, NY.  I mentioned those meetings on the King of the Ring page of this web site in 2010. Mr. Sugar was pleasant, approachable, and encouraging when I met him. His death—like that in February of Angelo Dundee in January of Goddy Petronelli—reminds me again how valuable it is to even speak briefly with the most knowledgeable professionals in the boxing world when they still are with us.

More to come.
